Ingredients
1kg apples (a combination of eating and cooking apples works best), peeled, quartered and cored
50g golden caster sugar
1 lemon, zest and juice
For the crumble topping
150g plain flour
100g unsalted butter, cut into cubes
100g golden caster sugar
50g rolled oats
Method
Place the apples, sugar, lemon and cinnamon in a solid steam container and steam in a Miele Steam Oven at 100°C for 5 minutes. This step will help soften the cooking apples before baking. If a steam oven is unavailable, place all the ingredients in a saucepan with the lid on and cook on a low heat for 5 – 6 minutes or until softened. Allow to cool slightly.
To make the topping, mix the flour, caster sugar and salt in a bowl, add the butter and rub with your fingertips into the dry ingredients. The mixture should have the texture of coarse breadcrumbs. Add the oats and mix well.
