Top Tips for the Christmas and New Year Clean Up

Plus Two Energy Saving and Efficient Dishwashers

Christmas and New Year is a time for getting together with family and friends over homecooked food, treats and festive nibbles, which often means an endless cycle of dishwashing. Our Product Training Manager, Sophie Lane shares her top tips on how to efficiently load your dishwasher for best results, as well as advice on how to prevent cloudy glassware.

Our G 7000 dishwasher collection includes freestanding, semi and fully integrated designs to suit a variety of kitchen spaces. The majority of models in the range are rated A for energy efficiency, while all G7000 dishwashers use just 6L of fresh water per cycle and benefit from low 41-43dB noise levels, ideal for open-plan kitchens. Each Miele dishwasher also offers superior performance in both cleaning and convenience and is tested for 20 years’* use.

Top Tips for the Christmas and New Year Clean Up

How to Load the Dishwasher

“Christmas and Boxing Day usually means an endless cycle of dishwashing, so make sure you’re loading it effectively to not only clean crockery, cutlery and cookware properly but also to get as much in one load as possible without compromising on the results.

  1. For plates, face them towards the centre in the slots on the bottom rack and don’t be tempted to add more plates than there are slots.
  2. Cups, glasses and bowls should be on the top rack at an angle, facing downwards for best results when cleaning as well as draining and drying.
  3. Plastic items and Tupperware should always be on the top rack, as they could otherwise get too hot if placed on the bottom.
  4. Pots and pans should be facing down on the bottom section.
  5. Cutlery should be handles down in the cutlery basket apart from sharp knives, which must always be sharp side down or laid flat on a cutlery tray.
  6. Never overload the dishwasher, make sure you’re not blocking the spray arms and wash baking trays separately in the sink.”

How to Avoid Cloudy Glassware

“All glassware is prone to clouding over a period of time; however certain factors can affect and accelerate this process.

  1. High wash temperatures are not recommended for glassware. Instead use a lower temperature wash which is much gentler. All Miele dishwashers feature a ‘Gentle’ programme which is a shorter duration and a lower wash temperature.
  2. Poor loading can be another cause of cloudy glasses. Take care not to knock glasses against other hard objects either during use or when loading in the dishwasher. This can cause small scratches which will not be visible to the naked eye at first. However, the more often the glasses are washed in the dishwasher, the more noticeable these scratches will become. Miele dishwashers with FlexLine baskets offer easy and careful loading.
  3. It's also important to check the dishwasher is set up correctly. Dishwashers require salt and rinse-aid. Both of these contribute towards achieving good washing and drying results. However, if the dosage amount of either of these is set too high or too low, it can impair results or cause clouding. Set the water hardness level in accordance with the water hardness in your local area (your local water authority will be able to provide this information).
  4. Using the right detergent can also help. Miele add glassware additives to its dishwasher detergents to help protect your items and prolong the shine. We also go one step further; models with AutoDos adjust the amount of detergent used based on the programme selected. For example, when choosing the ‘Gentle’ programme, the dishwasher will reduce the amount of detergent used to ensure glassware is protected.”
