Apple Crumble

Made with rolled oats and a selection of in-season apples, this comforting crumble recipe is perfect with our vanilla infused custard. Cooking the apples in a steam oven helps to soften the apples and ensures the crumble is full of flavour

  • 1kg apples (a combination of eating and cooking apples works best), peeled, quartered and cored

  • 50g golden caster sugar

  • 1 lemon, zest and juice

  • ½ tsp. ground cinnamon

For the crumble topping

  • 150g plain flour

  • 100g unsalted butter, cut into cubes

  • 100g golden caster sugar

  • 50g rolled oats

  • ½tsp. sea salt

  1. Place the apples, sugar, lemon and cinnamon in a solid steam container and steam in a Miele Steam Oven at 100°C for 5 minutes. This step will help soften the cooking apples before baking. If a steam oven is unavailable, place all the ingredients in a saucepan with the lid on and cook on a low heat for 5 – 6 minutes or until softened. Allow to cool slightly.

  2. To make the topping, mix the flour, caster sugar and salt in a bowl, add the butter and rub with your fingertips into the dry ingredients. The mixture should have the texture of coarse breadcrumbs. Add the oats and mix well.

  3. Pre-heat a Miele Oven on Fan Plus at 180°C. Spread the apples in an ovenproof dish and sprinkle the topping over the apples. Bake for about 25 – 30 minutes or until golden and bubbling. Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving with vanilla infused custard.
